Hi Terry, I just backed up /usr...2,184 megs, took 1hour 11 mins, with a 1.29 copmression ratio, at about 30 megs a min. No problems. (taper showed an error, but it was something I did. I am going to try to backup /proc and see what happens. I have to go back into work, so I am going to start it here in a bit...I hope you are right.... Terry Eck wrote:
Have you tried backing up just /usr. This directory should be pretty large. I'm not sure but at one time I have problems when I included /proc in the directories to be backed up. You might try leaving that directory out of the backup. Good Luck Terry

Ok, here goes, I am running SuSE6 .3, default install. Mad k6-2 300, Adaptec aha152x scsi card. Exabyte 8500 tape drive. The tape drive is the only thing on the scsi card, terminated, cabled and id is setup correct. (Not sure on the ID, but id of 4 should make no difference). Anyway, when I do small back ups, say just /home or /etc, not a problem. If I try a full backup (using ANY software, dump, taper, tar, etc...) my system locks up hard. I have tried most of the backup software booting single and it still locks up. I have changed scsi cards, cables, moved the tape drive to another system, new flash update for the tape drive, new tapes, cleaned the tape heads, sacrificed small animals to the linux gods, and I still can not get it to do full backups with out locking up. Could someone else point me another direction? My forehead is starting to blead, and the big dent in the wall is upsetting the wife... -- 9:30pm up 25 min, 1 user, load average: 1.18, 1.06, 0.83
