When I log out of any kind of X session, instead of returning to the log-in screen I get a black screen with a single blinking cursor in the upper left corner.
The most likely culprit is the fact that my monitor was not detected during my (8.1) installation. But I was very careful to enter all the sync ranges and other values while going through the manual config.
After I posted a (deservedly) glowing review of 8.1 on this list mentioning this as my only problem, I received a very nice email from Nuremburg assuring me that my monitor would be in the database and hopefully auto-detected in the next version (thanks again and yes SuSE will be getting another $80 next April as long as I'm still employed :-)) but in the meantime I'd appreciate any ideas on how I can fix this.
Try this: Start sax2 and in the monitor section, choose VESA , then your monitor screen size and sync. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
