I've had to surrender on this one; I can't figure this out for myself: When I log out of any kind of X session, instead of returning to the log-in screen I get a black screen with a single blinking cursor in the upper left corner. When I Ctrl-Alt-F(n) to a console and try startx etc, I get an error message about "no screens found." In addition I can't use the features like Ctrl-Alt-Page Down to shut down or Page Up to reboot. Same thing happens. Ditto for trying to start a second X session on that other console. So in other words I have to reboot every time I want to log out and into another session. The most likely culprit is the fact that my monitor was not detected during my (8.1) installation. But I was very careful to enter all the sync ranges and other values while going through the manual config. After I posted a (deservedly) glowing review of 8.1 on this list mentioning this as my only problem, I received a very nice email from Nuremburg assuring me that my monitor would be in the database and hopefully auto-detected in the next version (thanks again and yes SuSE will be getting another $80 next April as long as I'm still employed :-)) but in the meantime I'd appreciate any ideas on how I can fix this. -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA) brycehdy@sonic.net

Try this: Start sax2 and in the monitor section, choose VESA , then your monitor screen size and sync. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Thanks for the reply, but that didn't do it.
