Do you mean you put yourself, as a normal user, in the root group? That is *very* bad. You should have your normal login account as a member of the users group, then you use the su command to carry out root commands. The command you would use is 'su root' and then type in your root password. After this, you 'become' the root user, and any commands you type will be run as root, until you type exit. For more information of su, do a 'man su'.
