Does the Firefox "About Plugins" (URI: "about:plugins") list a Java plug-in?
Great thought:
I have nothing about java in about:plugins at all. However, I have several entries in about:config, but I'm not sure they are right:

You can also try this site to see if it is definitely a Java Plugin issue - http://netspeed.stanford.edu/
That uses a very simple Java applet.
This one is specifically for testing a brower's Java applet set-up and is (quasi-) "official" (for what that's worth):

Very cool. I saw the dancing "thing" that is the Java logo. Oh, BTW, I checked my connection speed on the other site. I don't know where that 10 base-t connection is. I should have 100 to the gigaswitch then out from there.
