Because of often releases of new versions I have issues with not working add-ons ("plain" TB doesn't fulfill my needs;-), I am using Thunderbird #6 and Firefox #9.x.
There is an extension called *Add-on* *Compatibility* *Reporter*, available for TB and FF, which makes all of *MY* extensions I have working in these versions of TB and FF.
However, your mileage may vary but it shouldn't stop you from trying out ACR.

IMHO, neither Kontact nor Evolution are even remotely comparable to Thunderbird + Lightning. Kontact/KMail still does not offer proper support for HTML formatted email - which is a must for any serious office use (try explaining your boss why your reply to his carefully formatter email messed up everything) - because its developers "are not interested" in addressing this issue. I've tried using Evolution against the corporate MS Exchange server (and now the BPOS server in the cloud) several times over the last 8 years, and each time found the same issues - is too slow, often hangs, and crashy to put it mildly.
On the other hand, Thunderbird + Lightning is the only combination that just works. Sane interface, fast filters, proper support for HTML formatted email, integrated calendaring, and definitely more stable than either Kmail or Evolution.
Thank you to everyone for offering your opinions. Those are all very helpful and give me lots to think about. I will probably run TB and Kontact concurrently for some time until I figure out which one I want to stick with. Thanks again!!
