The skinny: What gives? Microsoft is all of a sudden getting religion about security. Last week it announces that it will block several types of e-mail attachments in a forthcoming version of Outlook, as a way to stop the spread of viruses. Then this. Interesting.
Nope , they should do, but thier idea of "security" is to make it more difficult for anyone to use any M$ product w/o their knowledge and monitering .. " It is enough of a pita that many of the beta testers are saying they will NOT UG if this "feature" is left in the product... The main feature that I'v heard is the "call home" function where if w2k is anything to go by, I'd say you have hit the nail bang on the head! Lilo is the only "bootmanager" I have found that w2k doesn't "eat and then destroy" and that is probably partly do it it's having been installed in the MBR, cos , usually if w2k realises there IS a non M$ os on the drive or on the system it will rewrite the MBR as well as trash the other partitions! Xp m has teh added "bonus" of requiring a near constant connection to M$ ( It must "call home" several times while you use it , even "Office" will have this , er, feature .. Even worse, for Privacy folks, it sets a unique user ID ( tied to the machine it's installed on .... ) FWIW , if you dont let it call home you can't use it at all ... the programs w/ this feature wont run, and I understand, the OS wont run either ... Personlly, I figure it's the way they plan to move lots of folks onto their "software Rental" scheme ... cos you'll have to be connected to one of their servers to use it .. but "it will be so much easier for administrators and the "average" computer user ... No thanl you... Blondely j afterthought--- The early worm gets eaten.
