OIC. In that case, then I think you're sunk. Nautilus (AFAIK) displays all mounted volumes on the desktop - win partitions, CDs, floppies etc. - and there doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it. If you want a desktop without any such things, don't use nautilus to draw your desktop. Gnome will do a basic background, or you could use ROX or something else (you mentioned gmc, but I've not used that).
