Just did that (ACPI=off on boot menu). It doesn't "crash" to a full black screen now, but it gets to the point where it should be doing startx, but it's just hung. I see the last bit of console boot on the screen, along with a login: prompt, but the laptop's unresponsive.
This behaviour is the same things I am going thru trying to install 9.3 on my new computer.. You are describing them as I did .
