Have you tried to bood with ACPI=off
Just did that (ACPI=off on boot menu). It doesn't "crash" to a full black screen now, but it gets to the point where it should be doing startx, but it's just hung. I see the last bit of console boot on the screen, along with a login: prompt, but the laptop's unresponsive.

After it hangs that way, boot in failsafe or init 3, and check X log files to see for any problems there. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

This behaviour is the same things I am going thru trying to install 9.3 on my new computer.. You are describing them as I did . Tho it lost a bit in translation I think (me having Pebcak feelings him trying to assist. ;- p ) -- j registered linux user #363029 Mornings: Evolution in action. Only the grumpy will survive.
