I just installed the above (Mantel) kernel on the understanding that it now has support - albeit primitive - for the Conexant CX2388x chipset (on the tv tuner card I bought very recently). Well, I must be doing something very wrong but the card is not recognised in any size, form or shape :-(.
Considering that this is kernel 2.6.5-7 and SuSE 9.1 is now no doubt at the "factory" being massed produced for release in a few weeks, I am now wondering what sort of hassles one can expect with the version of the kernel plonked into Suse 9.1.
I mention this especially because I now, using kerenel 2.6.5, cannot use the USB flash disk (which was the subject of msgs in this forum last week but which I managed to get to work under the "standard" kernel in Suse 9.0).
Fdisk recognises the flash disk as /dev/sda1, formatted as FAT and 256Mb big but when it is plugged in the hotplug thingie does not put the entry into fstab (which it does under kernel 2.4.21-199) for it to be mounted. So, the flash disk causes a beep, the diode lights up, fdsik displays its presence - but after that, zilch, nought, zero.
Anyone have any ideas of what is missing here or what should be done to have at least the flash disk working?
Cheers.

Basil,
Not sure if this will help, hinder or render your system useless, but have you been to kraxel's site to update all the files there you have on your system? There is one in particular, I think might be needed for the 2.6.x kernel on our 9.0 systems and that is "udev". To the best of my understanding, and I haven't tried this yet, that should help with the USB problems. You should check all those file versions with your installed files as well and update as they are needed for the new kernel anyway. The last 2.6.x version I tried, there were problems with the usb devices on my system as well, but I think this will correct some of those things.

Thanks for trying, Lee, but udel is not the answer :-( (and it didn't crash the system). I have, BTW, read all there is to read on the Suse SDB re USB and I have installed from kraxel's page the bits which Suse recommend when transferring to the 2.6 kernel. One of the items recommended to be updated was hotplug...rpm but the version on the kraxel page is superceded by the one already installed on my system! (go figure). The weirdest part of this -- no I shouldn't say "weirdest" 'cause we are dealing with computers here -- is that I can mount the flash disk manually- but ONLY as root. Try mounting this as user and the error message that 'only root can do this' comes up. The mount command, BTW, used is mount -t /dev/sda /media/sda1. If you have any other ideas I'd be glad to hear them. Cheers. -- All Scottish food is based on a dare.
