Any of the text editors in Linux can copy text outside the current screen. You are confusing the editor capabilities with the plain X mouse copy/paste, which is limited to the current screen or terminal. Besides vi and emacs, which are both very powerful (and difficult) text editors capable of starting wars between their respective proponents, there are other simple text based text editors, such as joe (with several variants) or mcedit.
