Which Canon printer are you trying to print on? Have you looked at http://www.linuxprinting.org to see if your printer model is supported by the available open-source drivers? On our small office LAN we have recently connected a Canon i560 to a Windows machine, and I am happily printing to it from SuSE 8.2 through Samba, using the (not free, but excellent) printer drivers provided by http://www.turboprint.de.
