to be objective and constructive: 1- could someone articulate clearly what we want to achieve. (except journal selective editing) 2- there seem to be rants about viewing, filtering, template-like alerts?, forwarding logs to server? whats the use case of oocalc?
calc can import databases, and there is also a database component on LO/OO. With that you can read directly the syslog mysql database as generated by modern daemons. Once displayed in LO, you can apply filters, sorts, the lot of things you can do in a database with a powerful database viewer.
3- ALL the tools are already available, the code would be TRIVIAL. (from a quick view prelude etc look convoluted)
I'm reading about that. As I'm no longer being payed to examine logs, I will not develop code to inspect the journal, or invest much time on learning complex tools, but I'm interested in knowing if the tools exist. Tools ready made, not code to be done.
4- there is already a (toy) journal viewer in yast, if this is the kind of thing wanted, what is missing?
It seems a text viewer, does not separate fields in columns, no sort. I did not try the filter. It can not follow trails. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
