To be clear, you mean that gnu ddrescue is an integration of the dd_rhelp script and smartctl? Or, are there more than one ddrescue apps?
I think there are 3: Ddrescue, Dd_rescue, gnu_ddrescue are 3 different packages iirc. The names of the executables overlap iirc, so it is easy to get confused so I only install one at a time. Gnu_ddrescue has the functionality of Dd_rhelp integrated in. If you don't know any of them, you might as well use the gnu version since it is more sophisticated.
