Pete, I have been using Thunderbird from the time it was originally called Netscape (suite), or, to be less flowery, from day one when it became Thunderbird - and at that time I was dual booting between XP and SuSE AND using the same set of TB mail files in both XP and SuSE just to make it interesting :-) . I have been using the very same copy of /.thunderbird directory with all the mail in all the versions of SuSE and then openSUSE and now Ubuntu since that time, not to mention the change of ISPs; all I do is make a backup of the directory (and the /.mozilla directory for Firefox) and copy it over to the new installation of the new version of my OS. I have done the same for my wife on her computer - and she has made the same progression with Thunderbird(/Firefox), systems and ISPs as I have (naturally, since I do the "administration" :-) .) I have never had a crash or lost any mail (except once when I hit the wrong key and zapped the directory :-( - but I did have the backup). If you are having hassles, change to Thunderbird - unless you have some sort of religious barriers to doing so.
