Just in case anyone's interested, in looking at the python code for simple-ccsm it seems that the easiest way to do this is to issue: metacity --replace & Before and compiz-manager --replace & After executing the program. I did find that X-Plane does in fact prefer not having Compiz running, as it will run full screen only when it's disabled.
