I can't say, as gnome is my default desktop and it is fully installed. I also usually install kde as well, but not on this partition. 30 Mb is not that much, but of course, I do not know if that will solve the font problem you are seeing. grsync? I suppose it is a gnome tool, can't say how much of gnome has got to be installed for it to run correctly. The fonts are correct as user, but not as root? Curious.
