not sure what you mean smtp.concentric.net is my outbout mail server
OK, I'll try to explain a little better. The basis of Internet is DNS. Your nameserver defines where the mail for your domain must be delivered and which IP-numbers belong to which host. So if I want to send a mail to landie@concentric.net, my mailer first looks up where the nameserver for concentric.net is. Then it asks this nameserver where the mail must be send to. This entry is labeled with MX in a DNS-config, so it is often called the MX-host. Your nameserver said that smtp.concentric.net is the host to send the mail to. The procedure starts almost all over, but now mu mailer asks your nameserver for the IP-address of smtp.concentric.net. We humans, I asume you are human <grin>, use strings to communicate. Computers use numbers. Now my mailer tries to connect to smtp.concentric.net and deliver the mail. I think your mailer was down, because I could not connect to it. Now, it is possible to define a second MX host in the nameserver, as a fall back when the primary mailer is down. You, or your provider has not done so. So, my machine could not fall back to a secondairy mailer and the procedure failed. Yesterday, I got the message that smtp.conectric.net could not be found. Just a few moments ago I tried to ping this machine and it looks like it is up again so this mail should be delivered. Your problem is related. You tried to deliver the mail to smtp.concentric.net, but this machine was unreacheable. So you find the messages in your mail log that your machine could not find smtp.concentric.net and the mails stayed in your spool directory. At a later time, when your mailer tried again, it should have found that smtp.concentric.net is up and it should have delivered all messages.
You must fix 2 things: - 1 - Define a host called smtp in your DNS and configure it to take the mail for the domain concentric.net (DNS and Postfix config).
- 2 - Tell your own machine - if the domain concentric.net is your own domain - to deliver the mail locally. (Postfix config).
both tips are above my level, i will try to make understanding of it and thanks for your tips
I asumed you hosted your own DNS and SMTP server. If you don't you can dismiss both remarks. Regards, Cees.
