I forgot to write that I'd updated both modphp and apache2 via YOU, and still have the same problems. I have also removed php4-recode just on the off chance, but no go. I have also tried newer version of apache2 via apt (I think in suse-projects) but still get the same problem.

Not a solution, but just wanted to mention that I'm experiencing the same problem with the latest versions of Apache and PHP from a recent APT upgrade. They were working well prior to the upgrade.
