Ha! So you haven't suggested any alternative and you used the command yourself, so what's your point? It doesn't take long on my machine, despite it all being on rotating rust, because /home is pretty small (4.8G). Almost all my data is on separate filesystems. If you directly mount a large filesystem on /home then you'll have to scan it. You'll also have to deal with a whole class of problems that can occur that I don't, but I expect I have to deal with some you don't, so please don't discuss the merits.
Yes, as Per says /* expands and includes /home in the command line, so it is scanned.
