Howdy, I'm about to install SuSE 7.1 on 2 servers that have 36 GB SCSI drives, and I need a sure answer to this question: to I need a /boot partition or not? One reason my boss decided to switch to SuSE it because of support for RieserFS, but when I try to make a /boot partition and format it with RieserFS, I get an error message about not being able to use ReiserFS in a partition smaller then +30M. I tried telling it to make it +40M and +50M and I still get that error message. I heard that 7.1 comes with the new lilo so you don't really "need" a separate /boot partition, but this makes me nervous. Can I be 100% assured that these servers will never be unable to bott due to an unreachable kernel? Or do I need to use a separate /boot partition? If I need to use a separate /boot partition for safety, how do I manage to get it formatted with RieserFS? I don't want to leave it ext2 because we've crashed some servers and had to wait, (with clients howling for their web site to come back online) while fsck runs, and we have to pay a fee to get the techs at our hosting co to type in the fsck commands. We want to use RieserFS to do away with that.
