If one of those processes is Firefox, check with top. You'll likely find that (plugin-handler?) is consuming 100+% cpu, and just killing it instantly speeds up everything else, including Firefox.
Here on 11.2 it's plugin-containe, which seems more often to consume more RAM than CPU.
