Still trying to trace this down. I'm running blackbox now, and I didn't see any memory problems, so I suspected the problem was with kde2. But then I ran an OpenGL program, and *bam* I lost 200 MB that wasn't returned when the app exited. Does kde2 by any chance use any functions in the nvidia driver in it's normal operations, like perhaps in its rendering of anti-aliased fonts. I wasn't using any OpenGL screen savers. Yeah, I know. I'm grasping at straws now, but I really want this problem solved. I can't keep rebooting my comp every other day. Suddenly i get flashbacks to my win-using days :) //Anders On Fri, 19 Oct 2001, Bruce Marshall wrote:

I'm still having problems with a memory leak, and I can't seem to trace it down. I just upgraded to kernel 2.4.12-7 from Mantel's ftp and I'm running X 4.1.0-48, and KDE 2.2.1.
Here's the problem: I have 512 MB physical memory in the machine. Immediately after bootup and logging in to KDE I have just over 300 meg free, according to 'free'. Right now, after having the machine up for little over a day, I have just over 60 meg free. I shut down X, just to see if it was that, but nope, the memory is still gone. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if I add up the memory usage in 'ps aux', not counting duplicate threads using shared memory blocks, and add that to the memory used by modules according to lsmod, aren't I supposed to get the total memory used by the machine? Well, that adds up to about 100 meg with X down. I can't find any trace of the remaining memory.
my question is this: given the above, could someone tell me what it is I don't know about memory handling in linux.

I too have been puzzling this issue but haven't gone quite as far as you have.
My stats right now:
Kernel: 2.4.12 (vanilla, not SuSE)
Ram: 768MB Free: 6.8MB Swap used: 317MB
And that's after 2 days and 6 hrs.
I'll try to do some more digging.
