The sdb is the program/startup disk.
The sda is the internal working disk. It has four partitions.

Ok, this is much clearer. You have a kernel or hardware problem, it doesn't see the connection of the USB at all. Can you try with another operating system in the same computer, same cables and disks? If you don't have any installed, try booting from live media.
