Hello all,
I would like to know if there is a clear indication as to which of the file systems are best suited to large LVM volumes. I have an LVM of 926GB over 5 hard drives. Is there a "best file system" for such a large volume? I have been using Reiser for all my file systems thus far, but have heard that xfs is a good choice if many small files are involved. I have searched google with this query:
On the contrary, ReiserFS should be the champion when it comes to many small files. I can only give you a feedback from my personal experience. You might find it useful. I used to have XFS on one software raid1, XFS on one software raid5 that amounted to about 270 GB. It is much smaller than what you are running, and it is raid and not LVM, but, for whta is worth: I have had an awful experience with XFS on the root partition. It had caused frequent freezes of the system. Once I even had to replay the entire log for the raid5 partition, and even though the fs recevered well, I can't tell you how inconvenient it was to loog at the screen and fear for all your data, while everyone in the office prepares a potential public hagning. About a month ago I switched to ReiseFS and have had no trouble at all since then. I also gained some 12% of free space, probably due to the smaller block ReiserFS uses. Most of the files are just text documents, worksheets, not bigger than 20-50 kilos.
