Didn't SuSE V7.0 come with the windows partition shrinking prog. I didn't
buy it and went for V7.1 so I am just asking. When I installed V7.1 by
booting wih disk 1 it offered me an option to shrink the windows partition
as one of the first stages of the set-up program.
The ony thing I've usually done before installing Linux on a windows box was
to de-frag the hard disk so windows is 'up one end'.

I want to install my SuSE 7.0 on my wife's new laptop (Acer 613TXV) which has Windows ME preinstalled. I first wanted to use FIPS 2.0 to make space for Linux, but got warned that it should not be used under Windows but from a bootable floppy diskette. But this laptop lacks a floppy drive, so I decided to try Partition Magic 4.0, which I had available. However, it didn't install automatically and I got a warning that it may not be compatible with Windows ME. Nevertheless, I was able to install it manually and run the program and at least go through the repartitioning process; but when I tried to apply the changes, PM said these require switching to DOS mode, after which the computer would be rebooted. But the only thing that happened was it rebooted and did not apply the changes. I tried several operations with PM, but all failed just like this. Then I decided to go ahead and run FIPS under Windows, and this started out fine, but then bailed out because it determined that the number of sectors (long) according to the boot sector didn't match what is listed in the partition table. At this point I don't know what else to try and hope that someone here can help me out -- my wife needs to have both Linux and Windows running on this laptop. Should I change the partition table and if so, how (under Windows ME)? Or should I just try reinstalling Windows from the rescue disk? Or does this discrepancy indicate a damaged hard disk? I append the debug file of FIPS session in case that contains useful details. One other piece of information that might be relevant is that Windows does not occupy the entire hard disk -- the last ca. 700 MB are free and unformatted. Could this be indicative of a problem either with the hard disk or with the installation of Windows, resulting in the the sector count discrepancy?

Checking root sector ... Info: Partition table inconsistency
FIPS has detected that the 'physical' start or end sector (head/cylinder/ sector) do not match with the 'logical' start/end sector. This is not an error since the 'physical' values are redundant and not used anyway. There are many configurations where the values differ. This message is meant only to inform you that FIPS has adapted the 'physical' values according to the current drive geometry. So don't be alarmed by an unex- pected cylinder range.
