If you make a backup to (lets say) /backup that might be located on an external device, you should have taken care that the filesystem that lies underneath /backup is _also_ encrypted.
Exactly. The whole thread is a tempest in a teapot of misunderstanding. The encrypted partition/drive was unlocked (key supplied) when mounted and as such the files were accessible completely unencrypted. How else could they possibly be used by any Linux application?
