To the best of my knowledge, those are just directories for previous versions, and can be deleted. I would delete them to keep things clean. I'm new to Linux, but I'm very BIG on complete and accurate documentation, which I have found very little of in the Linux world. It doesn't help when the same incomplete or vague documentation is copied and distributed everywhere... I had to add this statement because it is so frustrating trying to get Linux running along with all of the applications necessary to replace Windows in a business environment. So far I've gotten BIND and APC PowerChute Network Shutdown running on SuSE 7.3 Professional. Now I'm trying to get Samba running, and it sucks because, as far as I'm concerned, the documentation is wrong or just too vague and incomplete to get the job done. Thanks! Also, I have 2 other older java folders which are /usr/lib/SunJava1-1.18 and SunJava2-1.3.1. How can I see what those are used with to decide if I can delete them? Try this (The following steps assume your j2re1.4.0 files are located in '/usr/local/j2re1.4.0'):
1. If there is an existing symbolic link titled 'java' in '/usr/lib', delete it by running:
rm /usr/lib/java If not, jsut go to Step 2.
2. To create / recreate the symbolic link to the j2re1.4.1 directory, run:
ln -s /usr/local/j2re1.4.0 /usr/lib/java

The installation I just made went to usr/java/j2re1.4.0
try this:
cd /usr/lib ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0 java
afterwards, I had to reboot my pc in order to get java -version to return the new version, as per the sym link.
But, I'm a linux novice and I'm sure 100 people here will tell you that you don't need to reboot, but do something else instead.

I have 4 different SunJava folders!
SunJava1 SunJava1-1.1.8 SunJava2 SunJava2-1.3.1
All have the same modified date of when I installed Suse.
The installation I just made went to usr/java/j2re1.4.0
This doesn't sound good.

You prolly have to make a new sym link. look in usr/lib/java and see where it takes you. --------------------------- Eric Carbone

Downloaded SunJava J2RE1.4 from Sun and did an upgrade. When I run java -version I get java 1.1.8.
How do I link java to the new version?
