You need to execute rpm -q --requires vlc-codecs to see which libavcodec vlc uses, vlc only builds against libavcodec56 but vlc-beta uses libavcodec57. If one of the two libavcodec packages isn't from Packman then you will have problems playing certain (most) video and audio files.
