Since it's KDE: Check the settings in Display / Monitor - Compositor settings. Try the various openGL options and see if that improves things. You might even stop the compositor from starting.
Ummm... Desktops are really not my area of expertise. I just take whatever is default and go with it. I wouldn't know what to change. From the menu: Systemsettings - Display & Monitor - Compositor. Try setting it to Xrender, click apply. There's a checkbox in the same screen to turn off the compositor at startup.
