I bought a box with SusE 7.0 Pro to study Linux and Oracle.
Instead of studying I started to fool around with the fresh installation and installed Ximian. Looks beautiful and I like it, but... I lost all other desktops. I also noticed that sound is gone. Hope you'll point me to the right RTFM :)
The reason for this is that Ximian installs it's own config for gdm, which is the Gnome Display Manager. There are two ways you can 'fix' this. 1) If you don't care which Display Manager you use, you could change back to KDM, the SuSE default, this will have all the other desktop options. To do this do: logout of Gnome (or whatever), rcxdm stop, edit /etc/rc.config, and change the DISPLAYMANAGER= entry to DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" then run SuSEconfig, rcxdm start Doing rcxdm restart at the end instead of stop then start won't work. 2) If you really passionately want to use GDM, simply create scripts for each desktop you want to be available in the directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/gdm/Sessions Here's an example: #!/bin/bash exec /usr/bin/X11/kde Simple eh? Save that in the directory as KDE and make it 755, and then restart GDM and you'll have a 'KDE' option -- James Ogley, Unix System Administrator, Pinnacle.Net james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 20 8731 3619 Listening to the sound of the coming rain... *********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY.
