i'm installing 7.1 on a pent pro/64ram/4gig HD; installation of 'default with office' goes fine until yast2 gets to the X11 configuration, when i select a resolution and try to test it, nothing happens. i can't finish the X config because yast2 wont let me continue w/o testing. so i skipped X config, figuring i could do it after the install. when i log in (as root) and run sax, i get a messed up screen (four red-ish, heavily pixelated boxes along upper edge of screen). i can't ctrl-c out of it,
But surely you can use [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BACKSPACE] ?
and i can't go to one of the other tty's.
[CTRL]+[ALT]+[F2] isn't working? Does your keyboard numlock light turn on and off when you tap your numlock key?
after a reboot, if i run sax again, it works fine...until i get to where it asks for info on the video card. i've got a STB 4MB AGP video card, which isn't on sax's little list
Odd. Is there a reason you can't use SuSE 7.2? Have you looked up that card on XFree's web site or on SuSE's hardware list?
... when i installed SVGA x server it still doesn't work.
so i basically have three questions:
1) should i be going through xfconfig instead of sax? any suggestions for HOWTOs would be greatly appreciated.
You should be using Sax2 unless you know your hardware cannot support XFree86 4, in which case you can use sax. xfconfig and all the others are much harder to use then Sax.
2) i'm currently using xfree86 3.0 ... will switching to xfree86 4.0 be any help here?
Please try it, it is much preferred.
3) how can i get the proper specs for the vid card? (searched google for the vid card info and got random hits...has anyone used this vid card before?)
I have used a 4 MB STB card before and didn't have any trouble. Try the STB web site maybe. I really think X4 is a better idea if possible.
