Well, Greg mentioned a price tag of $1500 for such a thing... I'm sure you can find benchmarks around. Just consider that software raid typically is slower than the same disks in singles, visibly so; thus there is margin to gain.
I have no interest in hardware performance gains, apparently you do. You said there was a large difference. So, if it is so important to you, I ask you to quantify it. Otherwise it is meaningless.
