Hi listmates,
- Grup says "stage 1.5", error 17 and halts.
- this happens because I had a SuSE partition on a freinds laptop alongside Vista. The MBR (as I see it) contains a small programme that points to the real GRUP booter on something like hda2, I believe.
My dear freind zapped the SuSE installation by having MS formatting it. But now, of course, the machine never reaches the 2nd stage of the GRUB loader...I wish to remedy it.
a) can I do that using, say Knoppix or SuSE live? b) Re-install a SUSE into that partion and go from there? c) Enter any fancey GRUP commands? d) Vista repair or something, the restore partition is still present?
Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Best regards, Verner
Don't Panic! I do this to myself all the time... Basically you just need to reinstall the boot code in the mbr for grub. As others have pointed out, you can use the rescue option on the install list to gain access to grub and reinstall grub (not the whole thing, just the boot code, done with 'grub install hd#) Where # is the disk No. 0, 1, ... As an alternative, you can also try to just reinstall the old mbr that vista overwrote. Generally there are 2 copies of the mbr on each disk. Just google 'vista repair reinstall master boot record' and I guarantee you will find what you need. Carlos is correct, it used to be fdisk /mbr, but that was in the '98 - ? days. I don't even think that worked with XP, maybe? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
