According to Yast, KDM4. Desktops are not something I play around with, so I have whatever 42.3 provided by default. When I search YaST software management using 'kdm4' it says 'No Results.'
So I think you need to provide more explanation.
By contrast, SDDM does return results. Neither does kde5. But 'kde plasma' returns hits for plasma-5. So again, I think you need to try harder to help yourself and others trying to help you.
In Yast sysconfig, under displaymanager it says kdm4. BTW, this is a direct copy 'n paste to show exactly what is in that box.
Sorry, what is a 'direct copy 'n paste' of what box?
Don't you know what a copy and paste is?
What exactly do you mean by 'Yast sysconfig'? In my case, under System/'/etc/sysconfig/editor', under DISPLAYMANAGER it says 'lightdm'.
YaST has a module to display sysconfig entries. You can look it up yourself. Section "system", name "sysconfig editor". James refers to that module.
The info for that setting is:
File: /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager Possible Values: kdm, kdm3, kdm4, xdm, gdm, wdm, entrance, console or any value
Not in my case. It says: Possible Values: kdm, xdm, gdm, wdm, entrance, console, lightdm, sddm or any value
So I guess you have indeed played around with something.
Not necessarily. There is no proof of that. Mine are different from both of you, and I did not change them.
Since YaST doesn't find any hits for kdm4 for me, I suppose you probably have some repository enabled (i.e. not standard) that I don't.
Default Value: Description:
Here you can set the default Display manager (kdm/xdm/gdm/wdm/entrance/console). all changes in this file require a restart of the displaymanager
James, unfortunately what you have pasted is the help text, not the configured value. James, simply paste the result of this command: grep -w DISPLAYMANAGER /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager One possible result would be: DISPLAYMANAGER="lightdm" And there are several possible values, all of them valid. And Dave, I also have James problem, I use XFCE, and I reported the exact versions I use on another post of this thread. I very much doubt this is related to the display manager. Maybe the desktop, but you are not asking for a command that would give us the exact desktop and version he is using... James, you can find the desktop you are using, if you really don't know which it is (unbelievable!), this way. Run this in a terminal: ps afxu | less -S Search (/) for the string "/usr/bin/X". You may see something different but equivalent to this:

See the line with "xfce4-session"? Thus I'm using XFCE version 4. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
