The OP didn't even say that the file system can handle uid/gid like chmod/chgrp, i.e. if it's a Linux file system like ext4. If it's FAT (or one of it's variants), then this won't be a solution. First of all, try to find the reason for the failure. What file system type is it? NTFS, EXT3, EXT4, XFS, Reiserfs, ...? Is the file system mounted read-only at that time?
