Multiple monitors

I have two monitors one nice 19" for use at home and a 14" to take to the lug. At this point I can not cp XF86Config.home to XF86Config even as root to maintain both. How do I maintain two setups one of which is 800x600 low refresh and the other 1024x768 16bit color.
