Chances are that you installed linux after msdos was already loaded. So, to msdos, as far as it's concerned, all that territory you gave linux is fair game for it to corrupt because it still thinks it has all that space to itself. Unix fdisk is infinitely superior to dos fdisk, but you have to use a little of both. 1. Repartition using dos fdisk. Wipe out all partitions, then make your partition for your m$ os. Don't make any other partitions YET. 2. Install your m$ os. 3. Now, go into unix fdisk, make an extended partition out of your remaining space, and carve that extended partitions into x number of logical drives for your linux system. 4. Install linux. 5. Now you have an install where both os'es can coexist peacefully without your m$ os hosing your linux partitions. Phil Sumner wrote:

The message "/dev/hda4 [my /usr partition] contains errors. Check forced." appeared. Then it chuntered away for a while.... until loads of errors started appearing on screen.(stuff like sector not found, sector id not found, ide reset.... can't remember exactly or write it down.. it's scrolled off screen. Now the screen is telling me to RUN FSCK MANUALLY, please repair and reboot. My question? How do I repair? I have a rescue disk but no idea how to use it! (D'OH) (.... I would probably say RTFM but the manuals are installed on the linux system which is not functioning at present!)
Anyone forthcoming with wonderful ideas?
