I wouldn't say "unnecessary", I'd say 'non existent' or 'incomplete'. If someone had manually deleted a kernel from /boot or a set of modules from /lib then it is inconsistency that is the issue. That's why I say DON'T DO THAT. Using 'purge-kernels' is the high level way of dealing with it. Yes you can do the 'zypper rm <old kernel package>' or even the 'rpm -e <old kernel package>', that eventually 'purge-kernels' uses, but why? The higher level tool does consistency checks and deals with sources and a more.
