you could try audacity, it's in the Suse distro since 8.x IIRC ( I know it was in 8.1 and .2 but do not remember if it was in the 8.0 version. It *is* a graphical item tho, rather than commandline...
I've tried audacity and am very favorably impressed with its editing capabilities and interface. Paul Abrahams
