You may want to look at python and some of the ides at www.pyhon.org , I also just got a realy good book on pyhton by allen gauld that is an expanded version of his on line tutorial. Its called learn to program using python , a tutorial for hobiest , self startes , ect.. Its 250 pages with sort concise chapters , a little over an inch thick , small enough to read on the subway or carry with you. If you want something meatier then Core Python is the way to go. THis one goes much more into deapth and is around 500 pages or so , about three inches thick. Its a very down to earth book on pththon that starts at the beginer level and works its way up to more advaced stuff. I opted for the shorter Goauld book ,as I wanted to ramp up quicky with it and like to take the book with me to read on the move. Core pyhton is much more detialed.
Wait a month and use Kylix (Delphi/C++Builder), it is identical to the Windows versions, but with support for Linux 'things' like Apache modules etc..
There are a bunch of kylix books slated to come out in may or june I think. I am realy interested in this as I was using delphi wich is a snap to throw components together and hook them up then tweak the code a bit.
AFAIK the 'command line' compiler, and class libraries will be free, but the IDE, Debugger and other 'visual' stuff will cost around the same as the Windows versions.
Cheers
Phil
