Actually, it seems to be the opposite of that. kde is infinitely more configurable than gnome, and the multiple desktops are very *un* windows-like. OTOH gnome tends to hide tuning knobs from the user, and as shipped in the past few suse releases, gnome defaults to a single desktop, just like microsoft windows. Interestingly, the kde project was launched to showcase the power and flexibility of *unix*. OTOH gnome architect Miguel De Icaza originally wanted to go work for microsoft, and gnome is said to be more of less his 'tip of the hat' to the redmond monopolist.
