[opensuse] RE: Best fit Windows windowing between KDE vs Gnome
Preface: I'm planning on starting a program by which anyone that will try it, giving the potential new client a version of the LIVE CD to play with and hopefully be a new convert. I have several in mind already since they've recently gotten burnt by buying a system with Vista. Most are on the fence between MAC and Linux. And not to start a posting war because I know there are pluses and minuses of each .... Actually, it seems to be the opposite of that. kde is infinitely more configurable than gnome, and the multiple desktops are very *un* windows-like. This list is fantastic! Not ever using Gnome, I didn't know about the look-and-feel. I've been using KDE (and Linux) for about 10 years and always thought it was, by default, closer to Windows look-and-feel. For my project sake, it looks like KDE it is. Maybe I did, but I've been using gnome for years, I have 10.3, and I use and used multiple desktops (nine). Yes, the setting is not trivial to find, but it is there. Strictly mercenary. I'm well rewarded for my suffering. Actually, I'm better described as a "computer enthusiast." Windows is the OS that pays the bills. Linux is the one that puts the biggest grin on my face. But in the end, it's the applications that matter most, not the OS. I'm answering you on Thunderbird, running on an XP-Pro laptop, because I've had various "issues" with Linux on this machine. I think relatively few professional (for our purposes, that's paid) software developers have the luxury of just saying "no" to Windows, in one way or another. There's no particular reason one must develop _for_ the Windows platform, but it's not realistic (again, for most of us) to refuse to touch a Windows box. (Thank the various gods for Cygwin!) Even though these days I do pretty much platform-neutral (so-called "pure" Java) server-side software with a browser-based user interface, I still have to be able to deal with clients and a partner who are Windows weenies. And then there's those few pieces of software that I use myself that are available only on Windows: Stuff ranging from the application that uploads and analyzes my GPS cycling tracks to MotionBased.com to Adobe Acrobat and others. I would consider it an enormous luxury to never need to use Windows, but that day is not yet in sight.

Sorry to hear that - linux work is definitely paying the bills for me, though there were lean years in the early going where I was pressured to do some windows stuff. Lately linux has been gaining enough momentum and mind share here at $BIG_COMPANY that I've got all sorts of fun projects lined up, and they've been perfectly willing to send me out to linux events (oracle/linux training, linux world, etc)

I develop Windows software for a living (for the past 23 years), and use Linux on my personal machines at home (4, plus some VMs). so I have some experience with both. IMHO, KDE more closely resembles the Windows GUI, but neither of them is exactly the same. Both offer options that can help make them more Windows-like, if that's what you're after. Vista is indeed a disaster. I have it installed on a VirtualBox v1.6 VM, and my wife uses it on her computer (it came with it installed). It's a shame they didn't implement UAC the way it's done with YaST2. I think KDE is more Windows-like but I use it because its far more
customizable than GNOME, which to me feels "too user friendly"....
honestly I'd rather use ratpoison than GNOME.
