Could be a silly question yet it is late if u don't ask it. When I am compiling the kernel do I have to download the sources for the pacthes for various packages which I did rpm install from the Suse ftp?
To compile the kernel sources you just have to be sure that you have the recommended compiler and other utilities. They are listed in: /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes If you have a SuSE 6.3 installation then you are up to date (even if you have 6.2, I think.) Other packages (that is general applications) not listed in the Changes file don't need to be recompiled to run in the new kernel, unless their documentation explicitly recommends it. There are two possible kernel sources you can use: The standard kernel (linclude.rpm and linux.rpm)) and the SuSE kernel (lx_suse.rpm). Both of them are version 2.2.13 in SuSE 6.3. I have installed 2.2.14 in my 6.3 system with no problems. My experience is that all of them will run in a general desktop computer. One of the advantages of using the SuSE kernel is that that's the one they support, other than that its description is very scant.
