They are just as good sequence of characters as any other. Why do you automatically assume that eth or wlan are any more meaningful? Just because you happen to speak English? There are languages that do not even use Latin alphabet.
It is a change in naming. From where to where does not matter. When you have a server that used to have a network interface named eth0 and it becomes enp13s0, you have the problem, that several pieces of network monitoring will not work (since they are configured for eth0), as well as several shell scripts have to be adapted (as they contain eth0). Looking at the scripts that exist, and their quite obfusc^Wunintuitive scripting style, changing will cause errors.
