Hi: SusE 8.1 I try to put "taboo--don't install" on packages that I don't want Yast to auto-install, and it looses the setting after closing the "Install or remove software" module. The next time I go into "Install or remove software" the settings of taboo are lost, and it has set the packages that I uninstalled back to auto-install. This also happens if I uncheck "Auto-check", the setting of which is also not kept. It seems the only way I can install vanilla software which works (since the Suse software almost never does, of things like xcdroast, mozilla, etc.) is to leave the rpms installed, and install the vanilla versions on top, or in other locations, and make sure the Suse ones don't get executed. This is annoying. This is a fundamental problem that has bugged me for a long time, because it constitures the cardinal sin of OSes, trying to be smarter than the user. Do the "taboo" settings stick forever in Yast in 8.2 or 9.0? If not, I am giving up and will try my old favorite Slackware or something for my next Linux box. I am dreading the next upgrade if I stick with Suse because of the amount of coercing (not configuring, but coercing) I have had to do to Suse 8.1 to get it to work well. Comments appreciated.
