In K-9 I created the below email as a response to a question on the factory list. (I only use K-9 for posting to mailing lists, so not that often.)
In K-9's email listing, the below appears as one e-mail and all is good.
But when I change to the google provided gmail app, the below shows up as 3 different emails. The first has about a third of the below edited in. Then the second has that third, plus a third more. And the third one is the below final email.
I only hit send once and again, K-9 shows it as only one email.
K-9 is akin to a normal Mail application, like KDE or Thunderbird with threading turned off. It works just like those do, where each mail is shown as a separate entity.
Google's GMAIL app is custom designed for GMAIL's eccentricity. It insists on showing you your email in "conversations" (Threaded view).
This is the way Gmail's web interface has always worked. The web mail only gained the ability to turn off conversation view about this time last year, but it does not yet apply to the Android version. See this story: http://blogs.computerworld.com/17061/google_gmail_conversation_view
So each program is working as it was intended.
Definitely not! Anders' comment that K-9 is permanently saving drafts in my mailbox sounds right. The first "draft" and the final sent email have similar headers. The obvious difference is the one that was "Sent" has Return-Path: <greg.freemyer@gmail.com> Received: from [192.168.1.52] (c-98-219-52-68.hsd1.ga.comcast.net. [98.219.52.68]) by mx.google.com with ESMTPS id x65sm19928141yhg.18.2011.10.08.19.38.13 (version=SSLv3 cipher=OTHER); Sat, 08 Oct 2011 19:38:14 -0700 (PDT) which the apparent draft does not have anything like that at all. That's logical if it was never actually sent. (Note that those drafts appear to be sent when I casually look via the gmail interface. And that has nothing to do with conversation mode.) The proper thing for K-9 to do is put those drafts in my drafts folder (ie label), then delete them when the next draft is saved or when the email is sent. K-9 did NOT delete the drafts in this case and they are not in my drafts folder. I've seen it fail to deleted drafts before as well, and I've probably only sent 10 or so emails with K-9, so that's a pretty high failure rate.
