Anders,
I have to agree with you again - the AS/400 is as stable as anything and
runs our SAP without downtime or problems. Printing, telnet, everything
with the AS/400 in our business is rock solid.
We have an HP3000 - also rock solid. The older versions of HP-IX are pure
Greek. To give you an idea - just for starters - the directory structure
works in reverse (as opposed to what Linux/Windows folk are used to).
Append to that accounts (as part of the standard file and folder naming
conventions - then limit the depth of directories. The newer versions of
the OS - called HP-UX have a very nice Linux interface (it is optional and
activated by a command). I have limited experience so the HP3000/9000 Pro's
out there - dont grill me - this is just stuff I have seen over others'
shoulders ;-)
It is quite complex - but man is it powerful and stable. Also pretty hacker
proof as far as script kiddies and the rest are concerned. Obviously
someone who knows what they are doing... Then again that is not the target
of this discussion.
Cheers,

- How many average IT deparments have AS400's or even more tough HP3000's that have a single guy that knows how to operate it and no one else? Linux is far more friendly
There I have to disagree. OS/400 is one of the best operating systems ever written, I don't see anything else coming even close to it in terms of logic and power of the command interface. Its only drawbacks are the text only interface (powerful but unsexy) and IBM's incredible lack of marketing skills Never seen HP-UX first hand so I can't comment on that, but I have heard some pretty horrible stories from friends who've worked with it -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
