I agree with Carlos, it's under warranty, right? The internal SATA disk itself is probably okay, I bet it's the USB/SATA converter that's at fault. I've taken external disk chassis apart to rescue data, and on more than one occasion the problem was with the converter. Long shot: did you try another USB cable? I've seen SATA cables go bad.
